Best Cars to Insure

Can a Minor register a Car and Insure it?

Hi, I'm 17 years old and I have my California Driver's License. I was thinking of buying my first car, but then I was told I can't register it under my name and I can't get it insured because I'm under 18. BTW it will be a used car. How about my parents?? Well I only live with my dad and he's not a US citizen and he uses public transportation.

  1. call the d.m.v they will tell you how to do it.
  2. Hi, I would make 2 phone calls, and I think that would resolve your dilemma. Call the DMV and ask about age restrictions - in my state (KS) if you are 16, you can, drive, insure and register your own car. The DMV will let you know if the state of CA says it is OK. Your insrance person will be able to let you know about any age requirements about purchasing insurance. I would guess there is not any restriction. They always want your money. Hope this helps.
  3. You absolutely positively can register and insure a car in your name in CA. In CA, you can legally drive at age 15 1/2 with a drivers permit and have a license at age 16. Not to mention you can own a car without a license and you can insure a car without a license, you just can legally drive it. Since you have a license, you have nothing to worry about. However, you insurance rates with be through the roof because your young, a male, and you have less than 5 years driving experience. Believe me, I just got into a car accident with a woman who had no license, but she had the vehicle registered in her name, the insurance policy in her name, and she was not a U.S. citizen, she actually was here illegally. So don't believe the hype, you can do more that most people know.
  4. you should be able to register the car but insurance is a different story. an insurance policy is a legal contract and minors cannot enter into a legal binding contract. i have never known a state a minor can have insurance in their name alone. easy way to find out if CA does? call a local agent and ask them.
  5. Hi, Good post. I had some problems with my car after I had an accident. My Insurer wanted to raise my rates $525 a year! I've never even gotten a speeding ticket! I looked for a new provider and found this website: http://www.house-rent-mortgage-help.org They compare all of the major insurance providers and give you the best deal. I ended up saving over $300 from what I was previously paying (that's $825 a year!). Good Luck
