How do I insure a UK registered car whilst living in Germany?
I am a UK citizen registered and living in Germany. I have bought and registered a right hand drive car in the UK and paid the road tax. To drive it back to Germany I require insurance, I can't find a german broker who will do it, how can I insure it through the UK. I want to keep it UK registered and return once a year to keep the MOT up to date.

- I suppose one way would be to insure the car on-line and include european cover
- your insurance is valid in Germany as well u don't need 2 policies
- I don`t think it is possible at all, as to legally drive a UK car in Europe it has to be MOT`d, taxed and insured in the country of origin, and only be there whilst touring Europe. It is also an offence for a resident of an EU country to drive a foreign reg car unless it is in the procedure of being matriculated to local plates etc. There are firms that will take your money, but..... You will find most countries have a similar crushing law as the UK for lack of proper paperwork. ;-) You can register it in Germany but you have 3-6months (I forget which) before you have to do so (from the moment you leave the UK) For your info the German version of an MOT is called a TUV and the German registration document is called a Fahrzeug Brief. If the vehicle is a RHD car then you need to have LHD headlights and the rear foglight needs to be on the other side. You will also need a document from the manufacturer called a Certificate Of Conformity to prove to the German gov it has EU type approval. The EU law states the vehicle time frame is from when the car leaves the country it is registered in, so it's not as simple as going over the border and coming back with a petrol receipt. You only have to be stopped by a informed Policemen and that's it. You will also find that the VAST majority of UK insurance only covers you for driving abroad short term and whilst on holiday and if you have to prove it the insurance company will wash their hands on you when you show the a ferry/chunnel ticket for 8 months ago, etc. Most people fail to read the small print on their insurance cover. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- If you are a German resident you have to have a German registered car, I don't know about license these days. When I lived there I had my German reg'd Mach 1 taken away by a cop who didn't like a foreigner without a German driving license driving that model of car. Try <Italsure. co.uk> they might offer cover, cannot understand why you have decided to do the opposite of what most people do!
- Hey! The only way you can insure the car to keep it in Germany is to reregister and insure it over there. There is cover on most insurance policies that will cover you in the EU for upto (i forget) either 30 or 45 days. So you can drive the vehicle back to Germany but you will need to sort it out over there. When you come back over here then, you just reregister it again! Hope this helps.
