Best Cars to Insure

Boulder, CO. What is the best car for a college student to own and drive there?

I want my son to have first a SAFE vehicle, then comes the cost factor (price, mileage, insuring, etc.). He'll want to drive in the mountains to ski, etc. Risby, hello? Look at the start of my question==> Boulder, Colorado is "there" What is a Reno Megan? Never heard of it. Who makes it and where would we look at one here in US?

  1. Where is there??
  2. any small SUV. Like RAV4, VUE, Escape, etc...
  3. PEUGEOT 206 ...very nice car ..or Reno Megan but for driving in the mountains to ski..im not sure
  4. Subaru makes the best AWD systems on the market. We treid to get my mom's Forester stuck last winter in norther WI and couldn't do it in 18 inches of fresh snow on the roads.
  5. As a current Colorado Resident and a former Boulder resident, I would say buy either a Subaru or a 4 wheel drive pickup (4 or 6 cylinder). Forget s SUV, that are not that safe to begin with, we have alot of high winds near the mountains and I have seen many SUVs and Semis flipped over because of it (also, when it snows too). Cost factor for license tags = Age, weight and Value. New cars, especially trucks can cost at least $600.00 a year. Car insurance will be more costly out here too (We have alot of hail sometimes etc., more than most states, many hail repair and windshield repair shops) If you want to save the most money, a used vehicle is the best way to go.
  6. A small subaru. Boulder has small parking spaces (on purpose) as they consider themselves a green town. You definately want 4 wheel drive for a less expereinced driver. Snow tires make all the difference in the world. IMHO Michelin Alpines are great and I run them year round on a 2 wheel drive car and run circle around the big SUVs in the snow.
