Best way to learn to drive manual transmission car?

Hi, I am thinking on buying a Porsche Boxter. I am used to drive in automatic in fact I have never driven a manual transmission before. What would be the best way to learn to drive manual transmission for a car like this?. I also heard they have them in automatic, can someone confirm this?, still I would like to know what the best way to learn to drive in manual would be for this car.

  1. The best way is to get in one and drive.
  2. It is awesome that your thinking of buying a cool Porsche boxter. However, if your going to buy one you should buy the manual. They are way better and you can go a lot faster. On the learning side I would just go to a basic driving school or have someone you know teach you, so that when you start to drive it you wont ware out the clutch as fast. The hardest part is learning how to get out of first, but after that it gets easier. Best of luck on your choice.
  3. Ultimately, the best way to learn is by doing... which will result in a period of rough riding as you get used to using the clutch. But as you go, you will get better and better and the process will become more automatic. Some basic things to remind yourself though: make sure the clutch pedal is all the way in before shifting; don't jerk the lever, be smooth with it and make sure it engages into the next gear; ease out the clutch while giving the needed throttle to keep the car steady (or moving forward). And, for a sports car, a manual transmission is very much part of the driving experience! However, there is something of an automatic option - Porsche offers a Tiptronic transmission ,which is an automatic transmission (complete with torque converter) that can be operated in a manual mode, or a sequential shift mode. The downside is that if you ever go to sell the car, most Porsche buyers will not be willing to consider a car without the manual transmission, so Tiptronics have lower resale values (and in the end, are not as fun to drive).
