Best Cars to Insure

What is the best /safest car/SUV to drive in the mountains and snow?

Public Comments

  1. Land Rover ot Range Rover no other even gets close to being as good as these two.
  2. The one fitted with 4 winter tires, such as Bridgestone Blizzaks. 4WD/AWD vehicle will accelerate faster in slippery conditions, but when you want to turn or stop that's strictly a function of tires.
  3. First you need good tires. For "cars" Audis or Subaru's are the best. SUV's Best Production 4X4's Hummer H1 Land Rover Defender Jeep Wrangler Mercedes G500 Volkswagen Touareg Land Rover Range Rover Toyota FJ Cruiser Nissan Extrerra LR3 Jeep Grand Cherokee Nissan Pathfinder Toyota Land Cruiser Lexus GX470 Mercedes ML500 Hummer H3 Hummer H2 Toyota 4Runner I think that list is long enough.
  4. I absolutely LOVE my Suburban four wheel drive for this purpose. My family drives the Montana prairies and mountains, particularly for skiing and we think this is really the best vehicle for the job. It has sufficient weight to hold the road, and is safe if you happen to slide off. Remember, no matter what you have, ice is slick and you will have trouble, so go slow!
  5. A snow plow
  6. Any vehicle can be safely operated in Mountains or snow... What it comes down to is preparation... the vehicle's and the drivers. Select tires designed to be used in snow. If your particular area has lots of ice, consider studs if they are legal in your area. If you go the "stud" route, do all four tires.... Learn how to react to the situation by practicing. I'm sure the local police wouldn't take kindly to my next comment, but it's better to learn in a controlled situation than to "practice" on the highway. Go into a large, empty parking lot during or after a snowstorm and practice what to do in a slide. (If caught, I will disavow any knowledge of your actions...:-} ) This will prepare you for the conditions you will encounter on mountain roads. Don't get in a hurry. Play your own game. If you are comfortable driving 35 mph, don't be intimidated by the H1 Hummer that blows by you at 55. You may just find him in the ditch down the road and you can wave as you drive by. Remember this.... it is better to be late, than not to arrive at all.... Four Wheel Drive will just get you further into the snowbank if you slide off the road. They may get you going better than 2Wheel drive... but they will not stop you any faster. Don't get over-confident. Four wheel drive will actually cause more problems than it will help if you are running on ice. You step on the brakes and lock up an axle, it will inturn, lock up the other one as well... now you are an unguided missile on a course for who-knows-where. Speed will be your biggest enemy. Hope this helps....
  7. My top three would be any type of Subaru, a Toyota 4Runner, or a Land Rover. All of these with 4 snow tires, becuase they help even AWD and 4X4 vehicles, and only work properly when installed in sets of 4.
