Whats the best first car to drive?

Im currently learning to drive and im wondering what the best cheapest car is to buy. We have a budget of about a grand. I want something fairly easy to drive and cheap to run but not an eyesore to look at!!! Any suggestions?

2. pontiac grand am i love it it has great winter driving
3. A Jeep Wrangler because it is the only modern car that isn't an eyesore.
