If you test drive it could you hassle the dealer to make your car cheaper?
you know how they say once you drive it off the parking lot the price of the car goes down. if you test drive a car and you drive it off the parking lot do you have the right to hassle the dealer to make it cheaper since it did go out of the parking lot? and could you also hassle the dealer to make it cheaper if it has a couple miles on the car already? silly questions but doesnt hurt to ask.

- yep. Its a silly question alright. the pharse about it going across the curb is colloquial - we mean the minute you take ownership. You can negotiate just about anything at the dealership though. Every car has "a couple of miles". Your warranty starts with whatever odometer reading is on it at the time you sign papers. So work the deal that is best for you.
- you can negotiate the price before or after you test drive the vehicle. Always better to shop around to see what you working with. Take no for an answer until you speak to the manager and negotiate with him.
- There is no way any salesman or dealership is going to mark down the price of a car just because it was test-driven. I am not sure, but I think there is even a law that says a test-driven car does not count as "used car miles". I hope someone in the new-car sales business will answer this for us, it would be interesting to know. But if you make the sales staff upset by your trying to finagle a lower price based on your driving the vehicle for a mile or less to test drive it, I would bet very strongly that you would be given the exact opposite... they not only might not cut you a decent deal, they may even add on to the price for your dishonesty! I would not be surprised! I personally have seen "new" cars with as much as 129 miles on the odometer! They usually arrive at the dealership with at least a dozen miles on the odometer just when they are delivered by the auto-rack truck!
- I would never hassle a dealer. Do your homework using google to determine the true dealer cost of the car and NEGOTIATE from that price. Also beware of hidden costs like "dealer prep fees" which can be up to $800. I prefer to shop via the internet and never step foot into a dealership except to pick up the car I have already purchased. The "it's worth less cause it's been off the lot" is taking a figure of speach to a literal translation and will label you as a "sucker". They will then proceed to hard sell you and you will lose. DON'T try to beat them at their own game on their home turf!
- You can try but they wont budge because many vehicles that are road-tested will sometimes have as much as 100 miles on them and they wont drop the price...............
- Wow. Silly is an understatement.
