How much is petro needed to drive from London to Exeter? (a small car)?

Hi. I'd like to go to the west country. I'm debating if I should take the train there (London <---> Exeter return 50 GBP) or hire a car to drive there. I'll need to hire a car there anyway. But I wonder if I should hire a car in London and drive there and back and pay the petro, or take the train there and hire the car locally. I plan to get a cheap economy car (the most fuel efficient car) Which way is cheaper? Thanks.

1. Get a deisel to hire if you can and don't forget some rental companies make yo pay a premium on the milage If it is £50 on the train it will probably be just a little dearer not much in it.
2. exeter yes? avis everwhere right? your lucky if there's an f in tesco. dont forget this is devon. local train services, unlike rest uk, are good....car hire...shopping...mod cons...is not. drive. b,ham (further north than you) to exeter (and further) £20 petrol, max, incl driving aroun there! (one way, but local travel there.)
3. Petrol is pretty important to make such a journey. If you're hiring a car anyway then it might be cheaper in Exeter, look up local car hire places and find out! Don't forget to take your passport (and maybe one or two other forms of ID) as identification. One other thing - sometimes they provide the hire car full of fuel, when you return it they try to top it up from their own pumps and charge you some ludicrous price per litre for any that they manage to fit in, secret is to fill it up to the brim at the nearest filling station just before you arrive back! Anywhere withing five miles should be fine, you won't use much in that distance, especially in a diesel. Also some places let you return the vehicle first thing the following day, before 10am or something, so look out for this in case you intend to arrive back after they're shut for the night.
4. Hire your own car in London, this will be much cheaper, unfortunately our country hasn't got around to cheap fares on public transport!
5. London to Exeter is 200 miles. If your car does 50 miles to the gallon petrol will cost £25. One days car hire will be more than the £25 savings. The best you could hope for is a car that does 60 mpg which will be about £17 in fuel. Don't forget to include all the extras in car hire CWD etc. BTW very few firms charge by the mile unless you do thousands in a short space of time.
