Is is safer to drive my car to work/class or take the "el" train?
I just got hired to work in downtown Chicago and would like to know if it is safer to drive to work or take the "el". I'll be working from 8am til 5pm M-F and may hang around downtown a little bit (i.e. shop or grab something for dinner ) on some days and possibly take some night classes twice a week. I will be living with a roommate on the southside of Chicago. Thanks!

- It's probably cheaper to take the train. Get a permit to conceal.
- Take the L. But what do I know I'm from Naperville.
- Not sure where you're going to be living on the Southside, but you may want to look into the Metra instead. The areas where the el is located on the southside of the city typically aren't the best, but the Metra line is closer to the lake and the neighborhoods are usually safer.
- It's safe and cheaper than driving the car. Parking downtown will run you about $20-plus bucks a day. Then you're talking about hanging out after work and maybe eating. You're talking about maybe $60 a day. That's a lot of scratch to spend five days a week. And we haven't even factored in gas and maintenance. The train is safe. I mean, look around you, everyone commutes to work downtown and back. You don't say exactly where you're coming from but if you have the option of taking the CTA do it. Sure you have to watch yourself a bit. This is a big city and there have been known to be a few pickpockets around or crazy homeless guys. But you'll be OK. But save some money and ride the el for $2 bucks a day. Save that money for your shopping or classes.
- ya take the el
- The el has always been my choice until lately. Cars have been getting stranded underground, check the news. Driving is always convenient but here in Chicago gas is roughly 3.85 and parking is at least $20-30 a day. If you are coming from the southside, fyi, the red line has been horrible. But so is spending $200 a week! Thank you Daley!
- Metra is known to be a more comfortable and safer commute than the El. They have monthly tickets that could be cheaper than a 30-day ticket for the Chicago Transit Authority. Try the link below* to see what your options could be and the cost to travel.
